jane austen sketchPlain Jane: “There is a quickness of perception in some, a nicety in the discernment of character, a natural penetration, in short, which no experience in others can equal.”

-Jane Austen in Persuasion

I think Jane wrote her autobiography in this quote. Her perception, discernment, and penetration of the human character allowed her to string together some of the best character sketches in literature despite never marrying, hardly venturing outside her native land, and keeping mostly to herself in the countryside of England.
